REMOVING LITTER FROM THE TRAPS ON THE YARRA RIVER IN AUSTRALIA VIA BARGE WITH CLAMSHELL GRAPPLE |
The Melbourne Parks Department opted to purchase a boat with a clamshell grapple to clean out the traps along the Yarra River. |
With the boat resting next to the Litter Trap, the boom arm is able to easily swing over to the trap to begin removing floating litter. |
After litter is captured by the clamshell, the boom arm swings to the back of the boat where the litter containment cages sit. |
Steel mesh cages sit at the back of the boat. The clamshell opens, litter falls into the cages where it is held until its final disposal. |
Once the Litter Trap is cleaned out, the boat moves on to remove floating litter from the next trap. There are currently 17 Bandalong Litter Traps on the Yarra River, which flows through Melbourne. |
