Henrico County Upgrades to a Bandalong Bandit

Henrico County replaced an aging boom system with a new Bandalong Bandit™ to capture trash from a nearby Walmart parking lot before it enters a neighborhood pond—providing a more efficient, low-maintenance solution for cleaner water.

Henrico County Upgrades to a Bandalong Bandit

Yesterday, Storm Water Systems completed the installation of a Bandalong Bandit in Henrico County, Virginia, marking another step toward cleaner, healthier waterways.

The project began when our team met Deana from Henrico County at the Virginia Marine Debris Summit earlier this summer in Virginia Beach. Deana shared the county’s ongoing challenge: a nearby Walmart parking lot was generating large amounts of litter during rain events, sending debris into a neighborhood pond through the stormwater system.

For years, the county had been using a traditional boom barrier, but it proved difficult to maintain and allowed debris to slip past during heavy flows. After reviewing the site, our team determined that the Bandalong Bandit™ would be the perfect upgrade—designed specifically to perform during storm events when trash is most likely to move downstream.

The Bandit’s compact, modular design makes it ideal for smaller waterways, ponds, and culverts, capturing floating litter efficiently while remaining easy to clean out and maintain.

Our crew assisted with the installation, ensuring the system was properly anchored and aligned for optimal flow. Once water levels rise and currents begin moving, the Bandit will automatically tighten into position, intercepting trash before it can enter the pond.

“We’re excited to see how the Bandit performs here,” said a representative from Storm Water Systems. “It’s always rewarding to help communities upgrade from systems that struggle to solutions that truly last.”

With this new installation, Henrico County joins a growing number of municipalities taking proactive steps to prevent litter at the source—protecting their local ponds, creeks, and rivers while contributing to a cleaner downstream environment.
