OverFlo Guard™

Prevents overflow blockages and lowers discharge temperatures — proven through field testing at the University of Georgia.

How the OverFlo Guard™ Works

The OverFlo Guard™ is a floating HDPE structure that surrounds existing overflow risers. It captures cooler, mid-depth water while keeping floating debris out — ensuring constant flow and protecting water quality.

The Challenge

Traditional overflow risers draw from the surface—where water is warm and filled with floating debris.
- Blockages cause flooding and maintenance issues.
- Warm outflows increase downstream temperatures, degrading aquatic habitats.

The Solution

The OverFlo Guard™ is a floating HDPE structure that surrounds existing overflow risers. It captures cooler, mid-depth water while keeping floating debris out — ensuring constant flow and protecting water quality.

Proven Results

A 2019 study by the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources found that the OverFlo Guard™ successfully discharged cooler water from mid-depths of Big Sister Pond at Whitehall Forest — improving habitat for cold-water species such as trout.

Proven Performance: Validated by the University of Georgia

In partnership with the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, the OverFlo Guard™ was evaluated in a field study at Big Sister Pond in Athens, GA. The goal of the research was to improve downstream water quality by reducing the temperature of water discharged from impoundments—an important factor for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems and supporting cold-water fish species such as trout.

Traditional overflow systems release warm surface water that can exceed 30°C (86°F) in Georgia summers, which is harmful to fish habitats. The UGA research team installed the OverFlo Guard™ over an existing riser pipe to test its ability to draw cooler water from mid-depths of the pond rather than from the surface. Continuous temperature monitoring revealed that water released through the OverFlo Guard™ was consistently cooler than surface water, confirming the system’s ability to reduce thermal loading in downstream environments.

These findings demonstrate that the OverFlo Guard™ is not only effective at preventing debris buildup—it also offers measurable environmental benefits. By releasing cooler, oxygen-rich water, the system helps expand viable cold-water habitat, improves dissolved oxygen balance, and supports the long-term health of aquatic life. The study concluded that this simple, passive modification can play a significant role in enhancing the ecological performance of ponds and reservoirs across the Southeast.
